Safely Experience a Summer Earthquake

Earquake Simulator

For many years, “earthquake weather” has been a term and a myth that people have believed, thinking that earthquakes are more common during hot and dry weather. In fact, earthquakes originate miles underground, and can happen at any time in any weather.

Even so, summer is just as good a time as any to get yourself prepared! Perhaps even the best time, if you have a more relaxed routine in the summer.

Today, we’re excited to introduce you to Quake Cottage, and its 2016 Canadian Tour! Quake Cottage is the ultimate earthquake simulator and visited Vancouver Island in May, so we were able to try it out for ourselves.

The North Saanich Fire Department and Insurance Bureau of Canada, along with Health Emergency Management BC, partnered to organized the Peninsula Emergency Preparedness Expo in Sidney, BC, and in our minds, the highlight of the event was being able to experience the Shake Zone! As the feature of the event, this portable earthquake simulator safely allows people to experience what a significant magnitude 8 earthquake really feels like.

It’s a brilliant way to teach and build public awareness of earthquake risk in our area. And were thrilled to see Quake Cottage, with its Shake Zone, move through some of the Canadian regions this spring through to the end of June.

They even have a new 9.5 magnitude simulator now! And while their Canadian tour has not been updated with new dates for the late summer and fall, you can book them for an event, wherever you live!

So please, in the spirit of caring, consider contacting them today to find out when they might be available to come spread public safety awareness to your community!
