The Eight Components of Earthquake Preparedness: #2 Food

As mentioned in last week’s post about water as a top priority in Earthquake Preparedness, there are eight fundamental steps when it comes to preparing yourself for the occurrence of an earthquake. If you’re living in an earthquake zone like British Columbia, it’s especially important to know the steps.

  1. Water
  2. Food
  3. Heat
  4. Shelter
  5. Light
  6. Communication
  7. First Aid
  8. Sanitation

The second component of Earthquake Preparedness is Food.

Not only is it often tasty, enjoyable to eat, and comforting, but it keeps us thinking clearly, keeps us strong, and keeps us alive! You all probably knew that already, though.

When you’re gathering food items to pack into your earthquake kit, it’s important that you include enough quality calories, so that you can last longer–even up to 2 weeks! Food bars only do the trick for so long. And after all, it’s better to be safe than sorry. Here are some items to consider:

  • freeze dried food, such as Legacy Foods (not only is Legacy Foods food non-GMO, low sodium, no-MSG and has certified gluten free options, but it also has a 25 year shelf life! See our sister site for more details)
  • meal replacement shakes
  • protection for your long-term food storage, using oxygen absorbers
  • gamma seal lids

Of course, as well as buying individual food products, we also highly recommend that you have a look at our Premium Two Week Earthquake Kit (which also comes in a smaller size, for 2 people).

Another option, for the real go-getters out there, is to create some of your own long-lasting food. Your can store food in mylar bags and use oxygen absorbers for long-term storage, or, using a dehydrator you can make fruit leather, jerky, taffy or crackers with great success! And perhaps even have fun in the process!

When it comes to emergency food, you’ll thank yourself later for considering your future appetite and cravings, so give it some good thought and plan carefully!
