The Eight Components of Emergency Preparedness: #8 Sanitation

Today we reach the eighth and final component of emergency preparedness: sanitation. While cleanliness may not even be present in your consciousness in the midst of an emergency—when the need arises, you’ll be beyond relieved that you planned ahead.

  1. Water
  2. Food
  3. Heat
  4. Shelter
  5. Light
  6. Communication
  7. First Aid
  8. Sanitation

This need may have to do with a cut or scratch that needs to be disinfected or the lack of a toilet facility.

Earthquakes are, to a large degree, unknowable. Take, for instance, the “big one” that’s been forecasted as an imminent disaster for years and years. Sometimes, people survive lesser earthquakes with hardly a scratch, but it seems reasonable to expect at least a nick or two, even if you don’t notice it, during the tempest.

And as I’m sure you know, even the tiniest of scratches can become infected and lead to much worse health complications if it’s not cleaned and taken care of directly.

If you’ve already made a start on getting together an emergency kit for yourself or your household, good for you! It’s a great idea to start at the top of our list of 8 priorities and work your way down. But it’s best that you prioritize each one, and don’t stop partway down the list. Sanitation really is not to be taken lightly.
